Beyond the Pale - A 'pale' is a fencepost. The English Pale was a boundary in Ireland marking out the part of Ireland under direct English rule circa 1450 (which included Dublin and environs). Those that lived 'beyond the pale', outside of English rule, were considered out of control and uncivilised. You decide...

Washington DC - is having a moment!

The White House behind bars
TRUMP TOWN

Washington DC (District of Columbia) always seemed so exotic to me - Is it a State? No. Is it a big city? No. Is it home to a revered leader? <awkward silence>

Virginia - Williamsburg & Jamestown

Hi-Jackin' the Stripes

“HISTORY IS THE MEMORY OF TIME”

Good ole Sir Walter Raleigh, the 16th century explorer, soldier, writer, puddle cover-upper, original tobacco smoker, first fan of potatoes, and a favourite of the Queen, named the state of Virginia after Elizabeth the virgin Queen.

North Carolina - Country Roads

12 seconds that changed the world

“LIFE IS OLD THERE, OLDER THAN THE TREES…”

We skidded our car into a space, flung our bags into our hotel room, and marched up through the streets of the mountain town of Asheville North Carolina. It was bitterly cold, especially for soft West Coasters, but it sure was pretty. The town had a hipster vibe, (famous for its craft beer), Dom can testify a bottle of 'Cold Mountains' warmed him up nicely.

Georgia - Atlanta

Land of the free, home of the Braves

“LEAVING ON THE MIDNIGHT TRAIN…”

Atlanta is the birthplace of Martin Luther King, Coca Cola, Chicken Fil-A and The Waffle House... Breakfast with a conscience on the side!

Pacific Coast Highway

Clint Eastwood's Mission Ranch

"DRIVING ALONG IN MY AUTOMOBILE"
If you truly want to say you saw California you have to putz along the Pacific Coast Highway. Don’t zoom along, don’t skedaddle, you have to “putz”, stopping here and there to see this and that. God, as they say, is in the detail.

Sacramento & Auburn - The Motherlode

"I love you, California"

CAPITAL GAINS

One burning hot Summer’s day we melted our way out of San Francisco and slithered up and across to California’s capital city, Sacramento. To visit our longest standing, not to mention outstanding, California compadres - Patrick and Erin.

Iowa - Des Moines, Pella, Kalona

Attack of the giant corn

CORNSTAR

Roadtripping in Iowa you see a shuck load of corn - it’s tall, it’s green, and it’s everywhere!

Wisconsin - Madison

Lake Life

WIKI-WIKI-WISCONSIN

Cheese is one of my favourite foods, I think it should have its own food group. My heart loves it, my body disagrees, I got my own internal Brexit going on. Nonetheless, I was salivating at thoughts of arriving in Wisconsin, Cheese Country, my kinda people.

Minnesota - Minneapolis, St Paul, Stillwater

Right lads, let's call that lunch

PURPLE RAIN

My references for Minnesota were; the singer Prince, the movie Fargo, and American Midwesterns of Scandinavian descent saying ‘Do you want a soda?’ (pronounced ‘sew-da’). Here are the things I found out; Prince lived in Minneapolis because it is awesome (may he Rest In Peace), it might have been snowing in Fargo but it was hotter than a hoppin hen in the Little Apple, and lastly, Minnesotans don’t called coke soda they call it pop!

Redwoods Roadtrip Part 3 - Mendocino

Sleep Hollow's got nothin' on Mendocino

CABOT COVE - IN THE FLESH

I have visited Mendocino on many occasions from solo trips, to family vacays, to girls weekends away. On the family roadtrip we descended into Mendocino from the mighty Avenue of the Giants. We stopped in the Children’s Forest for some tree hugging. Compared to the gigantor redwoods us mere mortals do indeed look child size, if not lego size. The trees are astounding, I recommend one and all to come see them.

Redwoods Roadtrip Part 2 - Eureka!

Baby Bear and Mama Bear

EUREKA!

Driving through a redwood is like watching an episode of Game of Thrones, once it is over you can’t believe what has happened, you feel strangely elated, you immediately want to talk to someone about it, followed by an urge to repeat it all over again.

Redwoods Roadtrip Part 1 – Fort Bragg

David and Goliath (aka Roisin and a Redwood)

BRAGGING RIGHTS

The further North I creep in California, the deeper I fall in love with this state. Growing up in Ireland my Dad talked wistfully of visiting the redwoods someday, it was ingrained in me, I thought it would stay in the margins of a mental bucket list, but now I am within striking distance of these gentle giants.

Hawaii - Maui/Paradise

Cant.Stop.Staring

MAUI MAUI CHIKA BOWIE

I’ve never been to Paradise, but I’ve been to Hawaii (it’s pretty Goddamn close).

Bahamas - Half Moon Cay

Bahamas-view-of-cruise-ship.jpg
Boating in the deep blue sea

JUST ANOTHER DAY FOR YOU AND ME IN PARADISE

Cruising is not all about flopping around poolside playing Name That Tune (although it mostly is). There were cinemas, singers, shops, bars, basketball and tennis courts plus, much to my excitement, a shuffleboard deck! Vintage cruising, now we’re talking.

St Martin - A Little bit French, A Little bit Dutch

Heartin' St Martin
TWO COUNTRIES IN ONE

We started our first day of 2016 being groomed to purchase the Hope Diamond. Everywhere we turned on the ship there were ‘experts’ giving talks on how to buy the perfect diamond, how far to push a pirate, and a 3 step guide on how to separate a fool from his gold.
